Best Gas Credit Cards in Canada
The highest gas rate on a Canadian credit card is 4% — but the fuel loyalty programme you link that card to is often worth more than the card itself. We rank seven cards on what they actually pay at the pump, then show you what linking is worth on top.
Short answer: The CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite Card is our top gas card: 4% cash back on gas and EV charging with no annual earning limit stated by CIBC, a $120 fee rebated in the first year, and — the part most rankings miss — it links to Journie Rewards for up to another 10¢ per litre at Chevron, Ultramar, Pioneer and Fas Gas. If you fill up at stand-alone stations, the American Express SimplyCash Preferred (#2) has the highest flat rate; Shell drivers who also travel should look at the Scotiabank Gold American Express (#4). Figures checked September 14, 2026 against issuer pages.
Which Are the Best Gas Credit Cards in Canada Right Now?
CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite Card
Why it’s #1: 4% cash back on gas and EV charging with no annual earning limit stated by CIBC — and it is the one card here that also links to Journie Rewards, for up to another 10¢ per litre at Chevron, Ultramar, Pioneer and Fas Gas.
Good for
- ✓4% cash back on gas and EV charging, with no annual earning limit stated
- ✓Any CIBC credit card links to Journie Rewards for up to 10¢/L off at Chevron, Ultramar, Pioneer, Fas Gas and On the Run
Worth knowing
- !2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases abroad
- !The $120 annual fee applies from year two onward
American Express SimplyCash Preferred Card
Why it’s #2: Matches the highest gas rate on this page at 4% cash back, with no loyalty programme to join — but only at stand-alone gas stations, which is a real limitation worth reading twice.
Good for
- ✓4% cash back on both gas and groceries at stand-alone locations in Canada
- ✓Billed at $9.99 a month rather than as one up-front annual charge
Worth knowing
- !The 4% applies only at stand-alone gas stations — not supermarket or big-box fuel bars
- !Amex is accepted at fewer Canadian gas stations than Visa or Mastercard
BMO CashBack World Elite Mastercard
Why it’s #3: Only 3% on gas, but the strongest all-round cash-back card here — 5% on groceries and 4% on transit — and the first year costs nothing. Worth it if fuel is one line in a broader budget rather than the whole story.
Good for
- ✓3% on gas and EV charging alongside 5% groceries and 4% transit
- ✓First-year annual fee waived, and cash back can be redeemed from $1
Worth knowing
- !The gas rate is capped at $300 of spending per month
- !Income requirement: $80,000 individual or $150,000 household
Scotiabank Gold American Express Card
Why it’s #4: 3x Scene+ on gas, plus the Shell partnership that launched in May 2026: link the card to Shell Go+ and you take 3¢ per litre off every grade, with another 4¢ on V-Power. It also charges no foreign transaction fee, which is unusual at this price.
Good for
- ✓Links to Shell Go+ for 3¢/L off all fuel grades, plus 4¢/L more on V-Power until 1 June 2027
- ✓No foreign transaction fee — rare on a card at this annual fee
Worth knowing
- !3x Scene+ on gas is a lower rate than the 4% cash cards above
- !Amex acceptance is narrower at Canadian gas stations than Visa or Mastercard
TD Cash Back Visa Infinite Card
Why it’s #5: 3% on gas, but with a $15,000 annual cap for that category on its own rather than a monthly ceiling. If you drive for a living, or simply drive a lot, that headroom matters more than a higher rate you stop earning in week three.
Good for
- ✓3% on gas and EV charging, capped separately at $15,000 a year rather than monthly
- ✓The same 3% covers groceries, transit, recurring bills and streaming
Worth knowing
- !$139 annual fee with no ongoing waiver
- !Cash Back Dollars redeem at a fixed rate, with no transfer options
RBC ION+ Visa
Why it’s #6: $48 a year for 3 Avion points per $1 on gas — and because it is an RBC card, you can link it to Petro-Points for up to 7¢ per litre in combined value at Petro-Canada.
Good for
- ✓Only $48 a year, and waived for eligible students and cardholders 24 and under
- ✓Linking an RBC card to Petro-Points is worth up to 7¢/L at Petro-Canada
Worth knowing
- !Avion points are worth less than straight cash back unless you redeem carefully
- !3 points per $1 is the ceiling across the bonus categories, not a flat guaranteed rate
Triangle World Elite Mastercard
Why it’s #7: The only card here that costs nothing and still pays at the pump — and it pays in cents per litre rather than a percentage, which is worth more when fuel prices are low.
Good for
- ✓No annual fee at all
- ✓7¢/L on premium and 5¢/L on other grades at Canadian Tire Gas+ and Petro-Canada
Worth knowing
- !No welcome offer currently advertised
- !CT Money is only useful if you shop at Canadian Tire banners
Link Your Card and Save More at the Pump
Compare any cards side by side →Every major Canadian fuel brand now runs a loyalty programme you can link a bank card to, and the discount lands at the pump whether or not that card earns a bonus rate on gas. At roughly $1.50 a litre, 10¢ per litre is about 6.7% back — more than any credit card pays on fuel on its own. These are free to join, and they stack with whatever your card earns.
| Programme | Stations | What you link | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Journie Rewards | Chevron, Ultramar, Pioneer, Fas Gas, On the Run | Any CIBC debit or credit card except Simplii | Up to 10¢/L — 3¢/L on every fill, plus 7¢/L once you reach 300 Journie points. Maximum 100 litres per fill-up. |
| Shell Go+ and Scene+ | Shell | Any eligible Scotiabank debit or credit card | 3¢/L off all grades, plus 4¢/L more on V-Power for Scene+ credit cards until 1 June 2027. Capped at 1,000 litres a month per card, and you also earn Scene+ points on the spend. |
| Petro-Points | Petro-Canada | Any RBC debit or credit card | Up to 7¢/L in combined value — 3¢/L instant, plus 20% bonus Petro-Points and 20% bonus Avion points. |
| PC Optimum | Esso and Mobil | PC Financial Mastercard | About 2¢/L with the standard card. The PC Insiders World Elite earns 50 points per litre, roughly 5¢/L, rising above 150 litres a month. |
Linking takes a few minutes in the bank’s app and can take up to two business days to activate. Programme terms change — the figures above were last verified against each provider’s own published terms in September 2026.

Common Questions About Gas Credit Cards
What’s the Best Credit Card for Gas in Canada?
On the published rate alone, the CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite Card and the American Express SimplyCash Preferred Card tie at 4% cash back on gas — the highest rate among the cards we cover. The CIBC card edges ahead in practice because any CIBC card can also be linked to Journie Rewards for up to another 10¢ per litre at Chevron, Ultramar, Pioneer and Fas Gas. The SimplyCash rate applies only at stand-alone gas stations, and Amex is accepted at fewer Canadian pumps.
Is a Fuel Loyalty Programme Worth More Than a Bonus Credit Card Rate?
Often, yes. At roughly $1.50 a litre, a 10¢ per litre discount is worth about 6.7% of what you spend — more than any Canadian credit card pays on fuel by itself. The two stack, so the strongest setup is usually a card with a decent gas rate that is also linked to the loyalty programme at the stations you actually pass. The programmes are free and linking takes a few minutes.
Do Gas Rewards Apply at Supermarket and Big-Box Fuel Bars?
Not always, and this is the most common surprise. Several cards restrict their bonus rate to stand-alone gas stations, which excludes fuel bars attached to a supermarket, warehouse club or big-box store. Those purchases often earn the base rate instead. If you usually fill up at a Costco or a grocery-attached station, check the wording on your specific card before you count on the bonus rate.
Can I Use More Than One Fuel Loyalty Programme?
You can join all of them, but each one links to a different bank’s cards and a different set of stations, so in practice you are choosing which brand to be loyal to. Journie covers Chevron, Ultramar, Pioneer and Fas Gas with CIBC cards; Shell Go+ works with Scotiabank cards; Petro-Points pairs with RBC; PC Optimum covers Esso and Mobil. Pick the one whose stations are on your normal route rather than the one with the highest headline number.
Does an Electric Vehicle Change the Answer?
Several of these cards now treat public EV charging as the same category as gas, including the CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite, the BMO CashBack World Elite and the TD Cash Back Visa Infinite. Fuel loyalty programmes generally do not cover charging, so if you have switched to an EV the card rate becomes the whole story and the linking advantage largely disappears.
Rates, fees and offers are as last verified by MoneyMint and may have changed — always confirm current terms on the issuer’s official page before applying. Fuel loyalty programme terms are set by the fuel brand, not the card issuer, and can change independently of your card. Some links on this page may be affiliate links, meaning MoneyMint could earn a commission if you apply through them, at no extra cost to you. This never affects which cards we feature or how we rank them. This is general information, not personalized financial advice. Where a card earns points, “estimated value” figures convert points to dollars using MoneyMint’s own point valuations — see our points value calculator.
