First, check whether you need a business card at all
Most Canadian issuers let a sole proprietor or side-business owner apply with their own name and Social Insurance Number rather than a registered business number, so being unincorporated is rarely the barrier people expect it to be. That also means a personal card stays on the table. Personal cards often earn at a higher rate on everyday categories such as groceries and gas, and the annual fee frequently buys more travel insurance. What a business card adds is separation of business and household spending at tax time, employee cards with individual limits, and a credit limit set against business revenue rather than personal income. Whether business spending stays off your personal credit file depends on the issuer, so confirm it rather than assuming. It is worth comparing the personal card you would otherwise carry before you decide.

Side-by-Side Comparison
Common Questions
How Do I Choose a Business Credit Card?
Start with how you pay it off. If your business ever carries a balance, the purchase rate matters more than the rewards — the gap between 14.99% and 20.99% on a $10,000 balance is roughly $600 a year, more than most welcome bonuses. If you always pay in full, match the earn categories to where your business actually spends, and check the annual cap on those categories.
Can I Get a Business Credit Card as a Sole Proprietor?
In most cases yes. Canadian issuers generally accept sole proprietors, using your own name as the business name, and underwrite the card against your personal credit. You will normally be asked for an estimate of annual business revenue and to provide a personal guarantee.
Do Business Credit Cards Have Higher Limits Than Personal Cards?
Not automatically. Limits are set against the guarantor’s credit profile and the business’s stated revenue, so a new sole proprietorship may see a limit similar to a personal card. Established businesses with revenue history typically qualify for more.
Should Business and Personal Spending Go on the Same Card?
No. Keeping them separate makes bookkeeping and tax time far simpler, keeps the interest deduction question clean, and avoids the risk of a personal card’s terms being breached by business use — most personal card agreements technically prohibit it.
