CREDIT CARD REVIEW

🎁 Up to 130,000 Membership Rewards points

MoneyMint Rating: 3.2/5 — based on our published rating criteria (rewards value, fees, flexibility, and eligibility transparency). Not sponsored by Amex.

The American Express Platinum Card is Amex Canada’s flagship charge card, built around airport lounge access, an extensive insurance suite, and elevated travel perks for a $799 annual fee. Its $200 travel credit, $200 dining credit, and Global Lounge Collection access can be worth well more than the fee for frequent travelers who use them every year. For anyone who travels rarely or won’t use the included credits, that same $799 fee is hard to justify.

Who It’s For

Best For

  • Frequent travelers who’ll actually use lounge access, and the travel and dining credits, every year
  • Readers who want strong, itemized travel insurance coverage
  • People who value hotel status (Hilton Gold, Marriott Gold) without meeting stay minimums
  • Cardholders comfortable running the math on whether $799/yr of credits and lounge value clears the fee

Not For

  • Infrequent travelers who won’t use the lounge, travel, or dining credits
  • Anyone wanting a simple, low-fee everyday card
  • Anyone carrying a revolving balance, given the FPO and delinquent-balance interest rates
  • Budget-conscious cardholders — $799/yr is a major commitment before any rewards are earned

Key Drawbacks to Know Before Applying

The Platinum Card’s biggest risk is under-redemption. Its $799 annual fee only pays for itself if you consistently use the $200 travel credit, $200 dining credit, and lounge access — someone who travels once a year, or forgets to book through the right channel, can easily end up paying more than they get back. Amex has also disclosed that unlimited Priority Pass and Plaza Premium lounge access becomes conditional on $20,000 in card spend per year starting January 2027, a real reduction for lower-spending cardholders. And two costs worth knowing before applying aren’t published anywhere by Amex: the foreign transaction fee and any credit score or income minimum — budget for the higher end of what comparable premium cards charge until you can confirm your own terms directly.

This is general information, not personalized financial advice — consider your own spending habits and consult a professional for decisions specific to your situation. Rates, fees, and offers are set by American Express and can change without notice; always confirm current terms on the issuer’s official page before applying.
