  • Our review

The CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Card is a mid-tier travel rewards card that pairs a broad travel insurance package with Aventura Points earned on everyday spending. It earns a base 1 point per dollar on all purchases, an enhanced 1.5 points per dollar (capped at $80,000 in combined annual spend) at grocery stores, gas stations, EV charging stations, and drugstores, and double points on travel booked through the CIBC Rewards Centre. It suits CIBC customers who want built-in travel coverage and a moderate rewards program without stepping up to a premium annual fee — though a few details, including the welcome offer’s expiry date and the exact NEXUS rebate value, aren’t fully confirmed in CIBC’s own published materials as of this review.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Points never expire, and the base rate of 1 point per $1 applies to every purchase
  • 1.5 points per $1 (50% more) at grocery stores, gas stations, EV charging stations, and drugstores, with a generous $80,000 combined annual spend cap

  • Strong included travel insurance suite: up to $5,000,000 in emergency medical coverage, plus trip cancellation, interruption, delay, and baggage coverage

Cons

  • Base 1 point/$1 rate is unremarkable next to flat-rate cash-back competitors
  • The 1.5x enhanced rate’s $80,000 annual cap is disclosed only in CIBC’s Benefits Guide, not the marketing page
  • Double points on travel apply only to bookings made through CIBC’s own Rewards Centre, not travel purchases generally
  • $139 annual fee, plus $50 per supplementary card (up to 3)
  • 2.5% foreign transaction fee and no promotional balance-transfer rate; cash advances/balance transfers run 22.99% (21.99% in Quebec)

Welcome bonus: Up to $1,900 in stated value — 15,000 Aventura Points on your first purchase, 30,000 more after spending $3,000+ within the first 4 monthly statement periods, and 15,000 more if you have at least $5,000 in net purchases in the first 4 monthly statement periods (60,000 points combined, which CIBC values at up to $1,200 in travel), plus a first-year annual fee rebate, 4 complimentary airport lounge visits (“up to $285 value”), a NEXUS application fee rebate (“$160 value”), and a free year of Skip+ (“$110 value”). Verified on CIBC’s page Sept 10, 2026; no stated expiry date — reconfirm before applying.

Note: the welcome bonus values the included NEXUS rebate at “$160,” while CIBC’s Benefits Guide separately describes an ongoing NEXUS rebate of “up to $200 every 4 years.” The two figures don’t obviously match on their face — treat both as unverified until CIBC clarifies, rather than assuming one supersedes the other.

Perks & Benefits

Travel perks

  • 4 complimentary airport lounge visits per year at 1,200+ lounges via the Visa Airport Companion Program (additional visits $32 USD per person)
  • 24/7 Visa Infinite Concierge service
  • NEXUS application fee rebate — up to $200 CAD every 4 years (standing benefit; see the welcome-bonus note on a possible $160 vs. $200 mismatch)
  • Journie Rewards gas-discount partnership, up to 10¢ per litre
  • No blackout dates on travel redemptions, per CIBC’s product page
  • Free Skip+ membership for the first year (part of the welcome offer)

Insurance & coverage

  • Emergency travel medical insurance up to $5,000,000 CAD (15 days per trip under age 65; 3 days at 65+)
  • Trip cancellation up to $1,500/person ($5,000 combined per trip); trip interruption/delay up to $2,000/person
  • Flight delay (4+ hours) and baggage delay (6+ hours) coverage, each up to $500; lost/damaged baggage up to $500
  • Car rental collision/loss damage insurance, vehicle value capped at $85,000 CAD, up to 48 days (the rental agency’s own CDW/LDW must be declined)
  • Purchase security and extended warranty (doubles the manufacturer’s warranty, up to one additional year)
  • Mobile device insurance up to $1,000 CAD for two years after purchase; hotel burglary insurance up to $2,500 CAD

Worth knowing

  • Minimum credit score and minimum credit limit are not published by CIBC for this card
Note: this card’s Certificate of Insurance (amended and restated effective July 1, 2025) currently lists Common Carrier Accident Insurance as active, covering up to $500,000 CAD per insured person. CIBC removed this same benefit from its Dividend-tier Visa cards effective that same date — but the removal notice doesn’t name Aventura-branded cards, and Aventura’s own Certificate of Insurance and Benefits Guide still list it as active. This benefit appears to still be active on this card as of our research date, though given how directly this mirrors what happened on the Dividend card, it’s worth a final check before relying on it.

Who It’s For

Best for

  • Everyday spenders who want travel insurance and a moderate travel rewards program without a premium-tier annual fee
  • Households with meaningful grocery, gas, EV-charging, or drugstore spending (1.5x, up to $80,000/year combined)
  • Travelers who book through the CIBC Rewards Centre (Expedia) and want the 2x travel rate
  • Applicants who meet the $60,000 individual / $100,000 household income requirement

Not ideal for

  • Big spenders who’ll exceed $80,000/year in the enhanced categories, since the rate drops back to 1x above that
  • Travelers who want a bonus rate on flights or hotels booked anywhere, since 2x only applies through CIBC’s own travel portal
  • Anyone who wants points that transfer to airline or hotel loyalty programs, since Aventura Points redeem through CIBC’s own rewards program
  • Anyone relying specifically on Common Carrier Accident Insurance without independently confirming it’s still active (see note above)
  • No-fee-card shoppers, since this card carries a $139 annual fee plus $50 per supplementary card
