Tangerine GIC Rates Today

MoneyMint editorial team · Rates checked 19 October 2026 on Tangerine’s own rate page · Re-checked weekly

How we make money. MoneyMint has no paid relationship with Tangerine or any other institution on this page, and the links below earn us nothing. If that changes, we will say so here.

Short answer: Tangerine’s highest GIC rate is 4.25% on a 5-year term, and a 1-year GIC pays 3.60%. You can start with $10, and RSP, Tax-Free and RIF GICs pay the same rates as a regular GIC. Those rates are well above the Big Five banks’ posted rates (2.75% to 3.55% for five years) but below the top rate in our weekly table (Oaken Financial at 4.50% for five years). Tangerine GICs are locked in until they mature.

Tangerine US Dollar GIC Rates

Tangerine also sells GICs in U.S. dollars. On 19 October 2026 they paid more than its Canadian-dollar GICs at every term. That gap only helps if you already hold U.S. dollars: converting Canadian dollars to buy one, and converting back at maturity, costs money at both ends and exposes you to exchange-rate moves.

How Tangerine Compares

Tangerine’s rates against the other 10 institutions in our weekly GIC table (non-redeemable, non-registered, checked 19 October 2026). The Big Five figures are posted rates; those banks sometimes run higher limited-time specials.

Term Tangerine Highest elsewhere Big Five posted Rank of 11

5 years
4.25% Oaken Financial 4.50% 2.75% to 3.55% 3

What that means in dollars: $10,000 in a 5-year Tangerine GIC at 4.25%, compounded annually, grows to about $12,313. At the lowest Big Five posted 5-year rate (2.75%) it would grow to about $11,453, and at the highest rate in our table (Oaken Financial, 4.50%) to about $12,462. These are estimates before tax, for a non-redeemable GIC held to maturity.

What to Know Before You Buy

Your Money Is Locked In

Tangerine says its GICs are designed to be held until maturity. Early redemption is only possible in exceptional cases, such as financial hardship, and only if an application is approved. If you might need the money sooner, keep it in savings instead.

You Choose What Happens at Maturity

You can renew principal and interest for the same term, renew the principal and take the interest, move into a different term, or take everything out. Renewals use the posted rate at the time, which may be lower than today, so check rates before your GIC matures. You can change the instructions any time during the term.

Registered GICs Pay the Same

RSP, Tax-Free and RIF GICs paid the same rates as regular GICs on the day we checked. Tangerine charges no fees on registered accounts while your money stays there, but a fee applies if you transfer registered funds to another institution.

Compare It With the Savings Offer

Tangerine is running a new-client savings offer: 5.00% on eligible registered savings and 4.50% on non-registered savings for five months, for clients whose Client Number is created between July 28 and November 30, 2026 (conditions apply). For money you need within five months, that pays more than a GIC. After five months the regular savings rate applies, while a GIC rate is fixed for the whole term. See our Tangerine savings account review.

Is a Tangerine GIC Safe?

Tangerine is a trade name of Tangerine Bank, a wholly owned subsidiary of Scotiabank that says it is a CDIC member in its own right. Under CDIC’s rules, eligible deposits are covered up to $100,000 per insured category (for example, in your own name, in a TFSA, or in an RRSP) at each member institution, including principal and interest. Because Tangerine Bank and Scotiabank are separate members, deposits at each are covered separately. CDIC also covers eligible deposits in foreign currency, such as Tangerine’s US$ GICs.

This is a summary of what Tangerine and CDIC publish, not a legal opinion. If you are depositing close to or above the limits, check the details with CDIC.

How We Check These Rates

Every Tangerine rate on this page comes from Tangerine’s own rate page, read on 19 October 2026. We do not copy rates from other comparison sites.

The comparison uses our weekly table of 11 banks and credit unions, where every rate also comes from the institution’s own site. We re-check this page every week and update the date at the top. If we cannot confirm a rate, we remove it rather than show a number we have not checked.
