MoneyMint editorial team · Rates checked 19 October 2026 on Oaken’s own rate page · Re-checked weekly
Short answer: Oaken paid the highest rates in our weekly table at every term from one to five years: 3.75% for one year and 4.50% for five, with interest paid annually. Monthly or semi-annual interest pays slightly less. The minimum is $1,000, RSP, TFSA and RIF GICs pay the same long-term rates, and deposits are held at Home Bank or Home Trust Company, both CDIC members. Oaken’s regular GICs are non-redeemable, and its terms under six months pay just 1.00%.

Source: Oaken GIC rates, checked 19 October 2026. Registered GICs compound annually and pay at maturity; annual interest payouts are available on TFSA GICs only. The 18-month term is not available in a RIF. Minimums: $1,000 for non-registered, RSP and TFSA GICs, $10,000 for RIF GICs. Oaken’s rate page lists RSP, TFSA and RIF GICs but not FHSA GICs.
Oaken Short-Term and Cashable GICs
Oaken’s strength is long terms. Every term under 180 days paid 1.00% on 19 October 2026, while Tangerine paid 2.50% for 90 days and EQ Bank 2.55% for 3 months on the same day. For money you need back within six months, compare a high-interest savings account first.

Short-term GICs are non-redeemable, need a $1,000 minimum and pay interest at maturity. Oaken lists registered short-term GICs for RSPs only, from 90 days. Its 1-year cashable GIC paid 2.25%, the same in both its after-30-days and after-90-days columns, with a $1,000 minimum and interest paid at maturity.
How Oaken Compares
Oaken’s rates against the other 10 institutions in our weekly GIC table (non-redeemable, non-registered, checked 19 October 2026). The Big Five figures are posted rates; those banks sometimes run higher limited-time specials.

What that means in dollars: $10,000 in a 5-year Oaken GIC at 4.50%, compounded annually, grows to about $12,462. At the lowest Big Five posted 5-year rate (2.75%) it would grow to about $11,453, and at the next-highest rate in our table (EQ Bank, 4.30%) to about $12,343. These are estimates before tax, for a non-redeemable GIC held to maturity.
What to Know Before You Buy
Your Money Is Locked In
Oaken’s long-term and short-term GICs are non-redeemable, so the money stays put until maturity. If you might need it sooner, Oaken’s 1-year cashable GIC paid 2.25%, well below its 3.75% locked-in 1-year rate, or keep the money in savings.
Choose How Interest Is Paid
Annual interest earns the most. Oaken’s rates were 0.05 percentage points lower for semi-annual interest and 0.10 lower for monthly interest at every term, a small cost if you want regular income from your GIC.
Registered GIC Rules
RSP, TFSA and RIF GICs paid the same long-term rates as annual-pay non-registered GICs. A RIF GIC needs $10,000 and cannot use the 18-month term, registered interest compounds and is paid at maturity (TFSAs can also pay annually), and Oaken’s rate page does not list an FHSA GIC.
Opening and Maturity
You can open an account online through Oaken Digital, by phone or at an Oaken location, and Oaken says completed applications are processed within five business days. To change what happens at maturity, the cutoff is one business day before maturity for a renewal or a payout to an Oaken Savings Account, and up to 20 business days for a cheque.
Is a Oaken GIC Safe?
Oaken Financial is Home Trust Company’s direct-to-consumer deposit brand and a trademark of Home Bank, a wholly owned subsidiary of Home Trust. Oaken says every deposit is held at either Home Bank or Home Trust Company, which are separate CDIC members, and that the Oaken name itself does not add coverage. It describes coverage as $100,000 per name registration for each issuer, with separate $100,000 coverage for joint deposits and for deposits in RSPs, TFSAs and RIFs, in line with CDIC’s rules.
This is a summary of what Oaken and CDIC publish, not a legal opinion. If you are depositing close to or above the limits, check the details with CDIC.

How We Check These Rates
Every Oaken rate on this page comes from Oaken’s own rate page, read on 19 October 2026. We do not copy rates from other comparison sites.
The comparison uses our weekly table of 11 banks and credit unions, where every rate also comes from the institution’s own site. We re-check this page every week and update the date at the top. If we cannot confirm a rate, we remove it rather than show a number we have not checked.
This page is general information, not financial advice. For a decision that depends on your own circumstances, speak to a qualified professional.
