The RBC Business Cash Back Mastercard is RBC’s no-fee cash-back card for small businesses. It pays a flat 1% on purchases, including pre-authorized bill payments, with 2% for your first three months. It’s easy to use, but the $650 yearly cap on cash back and the limit of one additional card make it a better fit for a sole proprietor or a very small team than for a growing business.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • No annual fee, and the additional card is free too
  • A flat 1% on everything, including pre-authorized bills, so there are no categories to track
  • 2% for your first three full monthly statement periods
  • You can ask for your cash back any time once you have $25 or more
  • Purchase security and extended warranty included
  • Petro-Canada fuel savings and a free DashPass trial when you link the card

Cons

  • Cash back is capped at $650 a year, which you reach at about $65,000 in spending
  • Only one additional card allowed, so it doesn’t suit businesses with several employees
  • No bonus categories: gas, office supplies and phone bills all earn the same 1%
  • Cash back is paid automatically only once a year, in January, unless you request it
  • 2.5% foreign transaction fee
  • No travel insurance included, and RBC doesn’t publish eligibility criteria

Rewards & Earn Rates

Purchases and pre-authorized bills1% cash back2% for your first 3 full monthly statement periods
Annual cap$650 cash backcombined, per annual period
Doesn’t earnNo cash backcash advances, balance transfers, bill payments that aren’t pre-authorized, interest and fees
Getting paidYearly, or on requestcredited automatically in January (February statement), or ask any time once you have $25+
The $650 cap is the number to check. At 1%, you’d reach it after about $65,000 of card spending in a year, a little sooner in your first year because of the 2% period. If your business puts more than that on a card each year, look for a card without a cap.

Insurance & Extras

  • Purchase security: eligible purchases are covered against theft, loss or damage for 90 days from the purchase date.
  • Extended warranty: doubles the manufacturer’s original Canadian warranty, by up to one extra year.
  • Petro-Canada: save 3¢ a litre on fuel and earn 20% more Petro-Points when you link the card (requires RBC Online Banking for Business).
  • DoorDash: 3 months of DashPass at no cost, then $9.99 a month unless you cancel.
  • Canadian Tire Triangle Rewards: earn 3x CT Money at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark’s and other partners when you link your Triangle Rewards account.
  • Mastercard Easy Savings: automatic rebates at participating merchants, shown on your statement.
  • Security: lock the card in the RBC Mobile app, and zero liability for fraudulent charges when you’ve taken reasonable care.
There’s no travel medical, trip cancellation or rental car coverage built in. RBC offers optional travel insurance at extra cost.

Who It’s For

Best for

  • Sole proprietors and very small businesses that want a free, simple cash-back card
  • Businesses that pay recurring bills by pre-authorized payment, since those earn too
  • RBC business banking clients who’d use the Petro-Canada savings

Not ideal for

  • Businesses that need cards for several employees
  • Businesses spending more than about $65,000 a year on the card, where the cap stops your earnings
  • Businesses that travel or spend heavily on gas, office supplies or telecom, where other cards earn more
