CIBC U.S. Dollar Aventura Gold Visa Card

Our take: the only U.S.-dollar card in Canada we track that earns rewards on every purchase and rebates its fee in the first year — useful if you spend in U.S. dollars often enough to collect points worth having.

The CIBC U.S. Dollar Aventura Gold Visa Card is a USD-denominated card: purchases made in U.S. dollars are charged and repaid in U.S. dollars, so there is no currency conversion fee on them. What sets it apart from the other USD cards we cover is that it still earns Aventura points, and CIBC rebates the US$35 annual fee for the first year. See how it compares with the rest in our best U.S. dollar credit cards ranking.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • No currency conversion fee on U.S. dollar purchases, which are charged and paid in USD
  • Earns Aventura points on every purchase, unusual for a U.S.-dollar card: 1 point per $1 on travel booked through the CIBC Rewards Centre and 1 point per $2 on everything else
  • Annual fee rebated in the first year, and rebated ongoing if you hold a CIBC US$ Personal Account or CIBC Bank USA Smart Account plus a premium CIBC personal credit card
  • Free additional cards for up to three people, and car rental, common carrier accident and purchase security insurance included

Cons

  • The base earn rate of 1 point per $2 is modest, worth roughly half a percent by our valuation of Aventura points
  • The 2,500-point welcome offer is paid for administrative steps such as signing up for eStatements, not for spending, and is worth about $30 by our estimate
  • Travel medical coverage is not included; CIBC offers it as optional paid insurance
  • You need U.S. dollars to pay the bill, so the card works best alongside a US$ chequing account

Rewards & Earn Rates

Eligible travel through the CIBC Rewards Centre1 point per $1CIBC by Expedia bookings
All other purchases1 point per $2
Estimated value~0.6% on everyday spendingusing MoneyMint’s Aventura point valuation of about 1.2 cents
Aventura points are redeemable for travel through CIBC’s Rewards Centre as well as merchandise and gift cards. On this card the earn rate is half what CIBC’s Canadian-dollar Aventura cards pay, so treat the points as a bonus on top of the conversion-fee saving rather than the reason to carry the card.

Who It’s For

Best for

  • Canadians who spend regularly in U.S. dollars and hold U.S. dollars to pay the bill
  • Anyone who wants some rewards on USD spending rather than none
  • CIBC customers who can qualify for the ongoing fee rebate with a US$ account and a premium CIBC card

Not ideal for

  • Light U.S. dollar spenders, since the fee is unlikely to be covered by a 0.6% earn rate
  • Anyone who wants the cheapest USD card to hold, where Scotiabank’s at US$35 with a 19.99% rate costs less to carry a balance on
  • People wanting travel medical coverage built in

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the annual fee for the CIBC U.S. Dollar Aventura Gold Visa Card?

The annual fee is US$35, with no fee for up to three additional cards. CIBC rebates the fee for the first year with the current welcome offer, and rebates it on an ongoing basis if you hold a CIBC US$ Personal Account or a CIBC Bank USA Smart Account along with a premium CIBC personal credit card.

What rewards does the CIBC U.S. Dollar Aventura Gold Visa Card earn?

You earn 1 Aventura point per $1 on eligible travel booked through the CIBC Rewards Centre (CIBC by Expedia) and 1 point per $2 on all other purchases. Using our valuation of about 1.2 cents per Aventura point, that is roughly 0.6% back on everyday spending.

Does this card have a foreign transaction fee?

There is no currency conversion fee on U.S. dollar purchases, because the account is held in U.S. dollars and you repay it in U.S. dollars. Purchases in other currencies are converted, and conversion costs apply, so check CIBC’s terms before using it outside the U.S.

What is the welcome offer?

Up to 2,500 Aventura points: 500 points for each of five actions completed within 60 days of approval — sharing your email address with CIBC, signing up for eStatements, adding an authorized user, holding an eligible CIBC chequing account and adding the card to Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google Pay. CIBC also rebates the first-year annual fee and includes a free first-year Skip+ membership.

What income do I need to qualify?

CIBC lists a minimum annual household income of $15,000 for this card, and a minimum credit limit applies. Approval also depends on your credit history, not income alone.

Do I need a U.S. dollar bank account?

Not strictly, but it helps. The statement is due in U.S. dollars, so paying from a Canadian-dollar account means your bank converts the payment at its own rate, which can cancel out the saving the card is meant to deliver.
