Best Chequing Accounts in Canada

Chequing accounts ranked on what you actually pay every month, what you get for free (e-Transfers, ATMs, cheques) and whether the sign-up cash is worth switching for. Most charge nothing at all, and of the ones that do, some waive the fee at a minimum balance while other plans charge a flat fee with no waiver option.

Short answer: The PC Money Account tops this list: no monthly fee, no minimum balance, unlimited transactions, and 2.20% on the optional savings side once you add your SIN. Wealthsimple Chequing is second — no fee and 1.25% rising to 2.25% with a $2,000 direct deposit — though your money sits in trust at a CDIC member rather than at a bank itself. Simplii No Fee Chequing is third and carries the largest bonus among the free accounts.

The Big Five accounts follow, and the reason is cost. A fee “waived” on a $4,000 balance is not free: that money earns nothing where it sits, which works out to about $96 a year against a 2.40% savings rate. BMO Performance and the CIBC Smart Account score best of that group on the strength of their sign-up bonuses and branch access. You can run the maths on any of them with our minimum balance calculator.Ranked by the MoneyMint Score · fees and rates checked September 17, 2026 against each bank’s own page

PC Money Account

Why it’s here: A no-fee hybrid chequing account that earns PC Optimum points instead of cash back — worth it mainly if you already shop at Loblaw banners or Shoppers Drug Mart. PC Financial was acquired by EQ Bank’s parent (EQB) in July 2026 and is expected to rebrand over time.

Why it’s here: the same no-fee, no-minimum deal as Simplii with Scotiabank’s ABM network instead of CIBC’s, and a $250 payroll bonus. It slips to #4 only because Simplii’s offer is bigger right now — if you already bank with Tangerine, there’s no reason to move.

Why it’s here: the second-largest welcome offer of any chequing account we track, unlimited transactions and cheques, and a real branch network. It only makes sense if you can keep $4,000 in the account — otherwise the $17.95 fee eats the bonus inside two years.

Current offer: Up to $900 total for new clients: $700 for opening and funding the chequing account by November 2, 2026 with a recurring direct deposit, plus $150 for also opening a Savings Amplifier Account and $50 for using My Financial Progress — see BMO’s page for the full conditions.

Why it’s here: CIBC’s flagship everyday account rounds out Big Five coverage here — the $16.95 fee waives at a $4,000 daily balance, or automatically for students, seniors 65+, newcomers, foreign workers and RDSP/DTC recipients. The advertised up to $850 bonus isn’t a standalone chequing offer, though: it only pays out if you also apply for a CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite card.

The catch is that the full $1,000 takes three products and several months of conditions.

Current offer: $700 for opening a new Preferred Package between July 3 and October 29, 2026, setting up a recurring direct deposit within 60 days that runs for six consecutive months, and completing one qualifying transaction. TD Unlimited Chequing Account

Why it’s here: the same $17.95 / $4,000 structure as BMO, but with two things BMO doesn’t give you — up to $139 of a TD credit card’s first-year annual fee rebated, and no TD fee at any ATM in Canada. Worth it if you already want one of the five eligible TD cards; otherwise it’s $215 a year for a balance that earns nothing.

Current offer: $500 cash for new TD chequing customers who open by November 2, 2026 and complete two of three qualifying activities by January 4, 2027. TD advertises up to $750, but the extra requires a savings account plus a credit card approval, and about $100 of it is estimated interest, not cash.

Scotiabank Ultimate Package

Why it’s here: Scotiabank’s premium package qualifies for the same up-to-$1,000 bundle bonus and adds a higher MomentumPLUS interest boost, but the $30.95 fee only disappears if you hold $6,000 every day of the month or $100,000 across your Scotiabank relationship. It ranks last because most people are better served by the Preferred Package at less than half the fee.

Current offer: $700 for opening a new Ultimate Package between July 3 and October 29, 2026 and meeting the direct deposit and transaction conditions, plus up to $300 more for a new Money Master Savings Account and an eligible Scotiabank credit card.

Why it’s here: Blue Rewards trades a lower cash bonus for Blue Points worth roughly the same ~$900 — but the $17.95 fee has no published waiver option, and the full bonus needs a separate Blue Rewards enrollment. It ranks near the bottom because most people are better served taking cash outright.

The $16.95 fee drops to as low as $4/month under RBC’s Value Program rebate (or $12.95/month for seniors), though unlike some competitors there’s no simple minimum-balance waiver. Why it isn’t ranked: StartRight is a newcomer bundle rather than a standalone chequing account — its fee waiver runs on a clock tied to arrival in Canada, so scoring it beside everyday accounts would not compare like with like.

Why it’s here: Built specifically for newcomers to Canada — no Canadian credit history required for a bundled credit card (limits up to $15,000), plus Nova Credit integration that imports credit history from 15 countries. The chequing fee is waived for the first 12 months, but returns afterward unless you keep a $4,000 daily balance.

Common questions

Is a No-Fee Chequing Account Really Free?

The account itself is, but watch for paid extras: paper cheques, out-of-network ATMs, wire transfers and overdraft. Each review lists the ones that apply.

Are Online Banks Safe?

Deposits at CDIC members — including Simplii (through CIBC), Tangerine (through Scotiabank) and EQ Bank — are insured up to $100,000 per insured category. For app-based providers, check the review for how your money is held.

How Do Chequing Welcome Bonuses Work?

Almost all of them require you to set up a recurring payroll or pension deposit within the first couple of months, and the cash is paid out afterwards. Read the conditions before you move your payroll.

Which Chequing Account Has the Biggest Sign-Up Bonus Right Now?

The BMO Performance Chequing Account: up to $700 for new clients who open and fund the account by November 2, 2026 and set up recurring direct deposit — but it charges $17.95 a month unless you keep $4,000 in the account. The TD Unlimited Chequing Account pays $500 cash (open by November 2, 2026 and complete two of three qualifying activities by December 2) on the same $17.95 fee and $4,000 waiver. Among no-fee accounts, Simplii’s $350 cash (open by January 31, 2027) is the largest.

Can I Have More Than One Chequing Account?

Yes, and it is common: a no-fee online account (Simplii, Tangerine, Wealthsimple or Neo) for day-to-day spending and e-Transfers, plus a big-bank account if you need branch services, drafts or a mortgage relationship. Just watch the fee-waiver minimums on any account that charges a monthly fee, and note that welcome bonuses are paid once per new client, not per account.
