CIBC Smart Account Review
Our take: A tiered, unlimited-transaction chequing account that’s free for many students, seniors, newcomers and foreign workers, and fee-free for everyone else once you maintain a $4,000 daily balance — but the advertised “up to $850” welcome offer is really a credit-card bundle, not a signup bonus for the chequing account alone.

The CIBC Smart Account is CIBC’s flagship everyday chequing account, built around unlimited transactions and a three-tier structure that unlocks extra perks as your combined CIBC balances grow. The $16.95 monthly fee (for up to three accounts) can be waived by keeping a $4,000 daily balance in one account, and it’s waived outright — no balance required — for several groups, including students under 25, seniors 65 and over, and newcomers to Canada. Here’s what you actually get at each tier, and where the account’s marketing claims need a closer look.

The $4,000 waiver does not make this account free. It changes what it costs from $203 a year to about $96 — because that $4,000 earns nothing sitting in a chequing account.
The waiver is the better of the two options here. You would need to tie up close to $8,475 before paying the $16.95 outright became cheaper. But it is not the same as a free account.
There is a third option this comparison makes visible: a chequing account with no monthly fee at all, with the $4,000 kept in savings instead. That costs nothing and earns the $96.
Which is right depends on whether you would keep that $4,000 idle anyway. If it is a buffer you never touch and never intended to invest, the waiver costs you little in practice. If you are stretching to hit the minimum, or that money could be working, the real cost is the full $96 — and a no-fee account is the better answer. Real annual cost is the lower of the annual fee and the interest given up on the balance needed to waive it. The 2.40% comparison rate is the highest rate available with no conditions among the savings accounts we track, checked September 17, 2026. Run your own numbers →

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I avoid the CIBC Smart Account’s monthly fee?
Keep an end-of-day balance of at least $4,000 in one CIBC Smart Account every day of the month, or qualify for one of CIBC’s fee-exempt groups — youth and students under 25, students 25 and up, seniors 65+, newcomers and foreign workers (first two years), and RDSP or Disability Tax Credit recipients — none of which require a minimum balance.
Is the $850 CIBC Smart Account welcome offer just for opening the account?
No. The advertised “up to $850” is a bundle offer that requires opening a CIBC Smart Account and applying for the CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite Card, with qualifying actions on both products. Check CIBC’s page for any account-only offer, since bundled promotions change often.
What are the CIBC Smart Account balance tiers?
Tier 1 covers $0 to $39,999 in average monthly CIBC deposit and investment balances, Tier 2 covers $40,000 to $99,999, and Tier 3 is $100,000 and up. Higher tiers add perks like unlimited worldwide non-CIBC ATM fee rebates and larger credit-card annual-fee rebates, but the $16.95 fee and its $4,000 waiver work the same at every tier.
Does the CIBC Smart Account pay interest?
No. It’s a chequing account and pays no interest on balances. CIBC’s eAdvantage Savings Account is the separate product for earning interest.
